Early Days

Blackboys vineyard

The first field of 3300 vines were staked and protected from the rabbits with the help of a couple of friends. It was particularly hot and dry in late April/early May 2007, conditions perfect for planting as the heavy planting machinery did not carve up any ruts that would have occurred if the ground had been wet

About 10 days after planting the rain came, and the timing could not have been better. This photograph was taken  at exactly three months old, the young vine desperately looking for something to hold onto as it grows above the rabbit tube and supporting stake.

Unbeknown to me at the time, this was to be the first of many, many photographs to be taken of this view. It's from our upstairs window, and has since framed photos of sunrises, sunsets, full moons, snow, rain, hail and occassionally, sunshine...

Trellis

Being a small vineyard with limited access, the posts had to be dropped in the lane outside the house. Choosing a particularly hot couple of weeks in the summer, yet another unwitting friend was recruited for hard, manual labour. The end posts were 3m long and up to 400mm in diameter, definitely a two man job....

Ultimately satisfying when a field nears completion, there was a lot of noise as each of the posts had to be driven into the ground as far as possible. Apologies to the neighbours.

The Big Freeze

Blackboys vineyard

Early 2007 brought some amazing snow to the vineyard. We had dustings before, but this really provided some beautiful photo opportunities
